Breck course description: Yum
The Summit Daily News printed a great article that made me smile this AM. It describes the course for Breck this weekend and is what I love to hear: Course designers who want to make technical 'cross courses...and not dirt crits. Get us on and off the bike as many times as possible. That is 'cross.
Thanks Tim, J-Rad and Jeff! Looking forward to seeing y'all and thanks for making a CROSS course!
But, ah, Jeff, this is funny:
Course familiarity could give local riders an inherent advantage over their Front Range counterparts on Sunday. According to Cospolich, so could the time of year. "I think a lot of mountain riders like to focus on the early (cyclocross) season," he said. "A lot of us are usually in good shape after the mountain biking season, while the Front Range riders can be burned out because they've had all year to ride their bikes."
Gotta get my digs in somewhere!

people like you, who live for cross, are different! the course is rocky and ball-bearing loose. a wider tire I think will do well.
hi greg,
i dig the blog. this will be my first year of cross racing. any specifics for warming up for cross races? i'm guessing some pretty hard efforts to get ready for the sprint from the gun, but if you have any other advice that would be great.
thanks,
cross newbie
Whatup Jeff! Ha! I was just bustin' yer stones.
I thought last years course was pretty rad. The back side whoops were rad! Looking forward to this year's. I am pretty familiar with the terrain so I agree with the rockiness....especially that section that goes under that overpass and up the other side. I am going to bring a couple-a-sets of wheels (tubulars, clinchers etc) and doe some hot laps but 32 is about the lowest I'm-a-running on that course.
Find me when I get there man!
Hey Anon! Man, warm up rituals are like religion in cross. Everyone's got their special way/thing/time to do certain things. I may do a posting on what I do but generally speaking a pre-ride is important to dial your equipment for the race (e.g. tire pressure probably most important) and a few efforts thrown in are also important. Next, you should try to pack a trainer or rollers with you to spin at about 60-70% for 20 minutes and then get that heart rate up to about 90% for a small period followed by 30-60 seconds at max (this can be repeated if you have a huge engine). You want to have the that engine of yours warm. The elements and temperature play a huge part here so your warm up time may vary. Also, get used to embrocations. Try and dial in a heat level you like/can tolerate and self massage....even if you are wearing leg warmers that day. Stimulate that sheeit! Then, go race hard and drink a beer or 6 (if you're of age of course. We run a respectable blog here)
happy times this weekend in the mtns. beer& brecktoberfest time for the front rangers get sum windshield time in instead of us mountain folks.
greg how bout the 411 on this weds. worlds coming up.
I was thinking about leaving the tubbies at home and not risk blowing them up on the mt bikey course. What about muds or I have some big 38c clinchers? Or am I overthinking this whole thing
DCheek: We typically meet at Amante at about 8AM on Wednesdays then figure it out from there.
Anon(3): The terrain in Breck is frankly like anywhere else in CO: dirt paths. There are a couple of dodgy sections with sharp rocks from courses past, but I'll call an audible when I get there and hot lap it in the AM. There is never a need for a 38c in 'cross.
while i agree that a 38 might not be in the "spirt" of cross, i disagree that a 38 in never needed in cross. if it wasn't then they would not have to have a rule to prevent the use of them.
???? just a thought and not one i have given a lot of thought too
