Working on the Reflex rims....
So I took my lunch break today by going into the garage and working on these Reflex rims of mine with the new tubulars all glued on. I had mad issues with the green compound SwissStop brake pads (meant for ceramic and aluminum) due to unbearable squeaking and chatter in the front and rear. Further, I got some glue on the sidewalls of the braking surface of the Reflex rims. I initially swapped out the SwissStops for standard Shimano wet/dry pads for aluminum rims but I am STILL getting unbearable chatter. I got myself a Mavic Brake Surface Stone (per Nick's instructions!) as seen in the picture in this post and worked the rims to death. The stone is more like a big gritty eraser. $29 bucks!! D'oh! I also used some acetone to work out the bit of glue on the rim surface. While a wee bit better, it's still WAY too grabby. Modulation is nonexistent and the choppiness and stutter returns under hard braking. I wonder if it just needs some grit and surface grinding. The Shimano pads work SWEET with my Ceramic Mavic clincher rims.
Any experts out there with advice??

what are you rolling for a fork? I had mad chatter with an Alan fork last year and replaced it with a Ritchey WCS and the chit-chat disappeared.
It's an AlphaQ 2.0 CX and is insane. I ran it last year. This is 100% about pad/rim surface issues. When I run teh Shimano pads and my training wheels (with ceramic rims), the contact, modulation, etc is sweet. Performs beautifully. I may just have to continue my brake pad search....
I'd highly recommend the Salmon pads from Kool Stop. They rock on aluminum rims.

I did the same sloppy glue job last year. I picked up a "contact cement remover pad" from McGuckin's ($1.97) looks like an eraser too but smaller. Alot of elbow grease, I mean ALOT, and I got most of it rubbed off. I got tirey of it and only got one wheel done, rode them a while, squackin' to all get out, then they eventually cleaned them selves and stopped the noise.
Oh.. and ran Green ritchey pads on Ano Mavic rims.

I gave in went back to BCS and they swapped me the Shimano pads for a set of black Kool Stops and things are infinitely better.
good to know. I have chatter with a Reynolds Ouzo cross fork, Ksyrium Elite (alum) rims, Pauls brakes with Kool Stop pads. I am going to be using ceramic rims soon on the bike, so I will try the Shimano pads.
Hi Greg, on recommendation, I will be trying out some mini V-brakes by tektro called RX5. I will be installing these on my pit bike sometime this week so i will give you an update on whether they suck or are the cure to annoying squeaking and shuddering. I am using Empella Froglegs with SwissStop Green compound, and I could not ride, it was too loud.
